Famous Rich And Jobless takes four celebrities out of their comfort zone to survive on less than £10 a day.
Meg found fame when she married Oasis rock star Noel Gallagher, though the couple divorced within four years.
Actor Larry Lamb, gardener Diarmuid Gavin and former model Emma Parker Bowles also appear in the programmes on BBC One Wales on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Meg has to hand in her £8,000 diamond earrings as the celebrities are stripped of everything they value to be left with some old clothes and a Jobseeker’s weekly allowance of £39 to live on.

They are guided and assisted by employment expert Emma Harrison and Craig Last, a former youth worker for the charity Centrepoint, who has helped many homeless young people find jobs.

At the beginning of their eight-day experience, they are sent to four unemployment blackspots across the country where they spend their first four days surviving on benefits and looking for work.

Larry goes to Hartlepool, Diarmuid to Hackney, Meg spends her time in the Ebbw Valley and Emma tries to find work in Wolverhampton.

Meg succeeds in earning some money by making friends with the locals in her community.

A tiny rented flat in Ebbw Vale is a far cry from her £1m London home, and she admits she doesn’t know how much electricity costs. After earning £52 for a nine-hour shift on a market stall she says: “I think I will be a lot more economical in every way when I get home.”

But she perseveres and even inspires a former prisoner to ignore a stream of job rejections and find confidence to keep looking for work.A report by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation in 2009 found that Blaenau Gwent – the county which includes Ebbw Vale – had the highest rate of joblessness in the UK.

Meg Mathews isn’t used to slumming it. So the ex-wife of rock star Noel Gallagher got a rude awakening when she swapped her lavish lifestyle for life on the breadline.

Meg gave up her designer labels and home comforts for a world of poverty and state benefits for a new BBC documentary Famous, Rich and Jobless.

She was one of four celebrities who moved in with unemployed people to get a taste of what life on the dole is really like.
“This was one of the most challenging things I have ever done and made me realise a lot about life,” said Meg, 43, who is now an interior designer and engaged to art professor Peter Siddell, 49. “I know I am privileged. I can give my daughter a good upbringing and I don’t have the worries a lot of people have.

“I have never taken anything for granted, but now if I look in the mirror and think ‘does my bum look fat?’ I realise how shallow it seems.”

After divorcing Oasis star Noel, Meg walked away with a reported £4million settlement. She lives with their 10-year-old daughter Anais in a £2million house in Hampstead, North London.

But for the programme she moved into a Wolverhampton flat with ex-con Nick, a convicted burglar. They spent four days together as Meg took him to JobCentres and encouraged him to look for work. They survived on £10 a day, eating 37p tins of spaghetti.

Meg says: “Unemployed people are not lazy, sitting round on their arses. Being jobless affects your self-esteem and you have to find a way to carry on.” Meg also had to survive on her own in an unfurnished flat in Ebbw Vale, South Wales. She found jobs on a market stall and washing up in a cafe, but hit a low point when she found she had no hot water. “I was broken-hearted there – I slept in my clothes and washed in the sink.”

When Meg got home after the gruelling filming she saw her world through new eyes. She says: “I sat at Anais’ school concert and felt weird. I said to Peter, I don’t feel I am in this world of Hampstead yummy mummies Meg on the show with ex-con Nick who bought champagne and sushi for the evening. It was a real culture shock.”

However, gone now are the drink, drugs and partying days. Today she is teetotal and has given up smoking.
“I have been through the whole rehab thing, for depression,” she admits. “I can understand how some people who have not got a job can get drawn into that cycle. You find things to fill the void, be it drink or drugs. I had seven years with Brit Pop, seven years with Noel, the sex and drugs and rock ‘n’ roll.

“When I hit 40 I went into a depression. I had the massive house, the Porsche, great clothes, but I didn’t have someone to hug. I’d give it all away to have that relationship.”

Now planning her wedding, Meg says her time on the show has made her change the way she lives. She has slashed her weekly supermarket bill, and adds: “We go round turning off lights and don’t waste water.”

These days Meg has a more natural look as well. Her hair is brown rather than platinum blonde and she’s eased up on the Botox and collagen. She says: “I think I’m done with surgery. But never say never.”

I cant wait for this year’s Mummy Rocks it will be taking place Wednesday 10th March at the Bloomsbury Ballrooms from 7.30pm-1.00am.

Mummy Rocks is an event created to celebrate the important role of mothers and more importantly to aid in Great Ormond Street Hospital annual fund-raising target of £50m. It is a great cause where we can all come together have a fab time and help a well deserved cause.

The money that is hoped to be raised at this year’s event (£125,000) is for the redevelopment of two Parenting Bays in the Neurosciences’ Wing at GOSH. These bays allow the mothers to stay close to their little ones rather than having to go off-site due to the current lack of facilities. This is not only important for the mothers but also for the recuperation of the children.

This is such a great cause, and every year this event never fails to be a complete hit!

Love Meg xxx
This week it’s all about slowing down (but still going to the gym) and spending time with my two favourite people.. Peter and Anais!
Peter is finally back from his Milan trip, I am so pleased! Anais and I have been battling it out on the Wii after her homework has been done; I must get more practice in on the table tennis game I need to at least win once!
Training at KX gym is going well, I am definately back in the training zone and feel so much better for it, plus I need to work off that great birthday cake I got for Anais… Lush.

Things are panning out really nicely this week.
